So you’ve just found a brand new dishwasher and it is everything you dreamed of and more. It’s energy-efficient and has that sleek look that matches your kitchen perfectly. But before you buy, know that a dishwasher is considered a major kitchen appliance, and installing one is not as easy as plugging in a toaster. Get the facts about what to do before you get to installing your dishwasher.
Measure
Before you step into the store to purchase your dishwasher, it’s important that you measure the space where the dishwasher will be placed. In the United States, there are 3 sizes of dishwashers: compact, standard and custom. The vast majority will be the size category, standard, which measures 24 inches wide by 35 inches high and 24 inches deep. While these measurements are considered “standard,” they may vary slightly between brands. It is important to measure your space to choose the best dishwasher for your install to avoid any major fit issues.
Where is the Water Supply?
It’s no coincidence that dishwashers are almost always located next to or near the kitchen sink. It’s not out of convenience but mostly for necessity. Dishwashers require hot water to run efficiently, and in most cases, the kitchen sink and dishwasher use the same hot water line. A new valve will be needed in order to connect to the hot water supply. A hole may need to be drilled on the inside of your cabinet in order to connect your dishwasher. If you are replacing an existing dishwasher, these requirements should already be in place.
Think about Power Supply
Many of us consider ourselves to be DIY savvy, but if you do not have a lot of experience working with electricity and plumbing, you may want to hire a professional for the dishwasher install. If you are replacing a dishwasher, this may be slightly easier as the bulk of the wiring may already be in place. If you are placing a dishwasher where none existed before, this will be more challenging. Building codes vary from state to state and from city to city, but most building codes require the dishwasher and garbage disposal to be on a separate circuit.
Purchase the Right Parts
Most new dishwashers will come equipped with a standard connection kit, but if yours did not, you will need the right parts before you install them. A universal dishwasher installation kit will have all the necessary parts needed for the installation of your dishwasher. These vary in price and can be purchased at most home improvement stores.

I called the number and had to leave a message. Within 10 minutes someone called me back. They came out within a few hours and fixed my drain. Clay, my technician, was professional, and knowledgeable with a great attitude (especially on a hot Friday afternoon)! Fixed my problem in no time. Their service is outstanding. And prices are reasonable for the area. I would definitely use them again!
Stephanie Mellott First of all, they were ON TIME. In fact, the first visit was early! A slab leak is scary, but within the week, I was scheduled for repair. It took a matter of hours. All of the plumbers were polite and worked quickly and cleanly. When the contractor came to assess the damage to the house, he was so impressed by the lack of damage to my home that he asked me for the name of ASAP twice! Highly recommend this company and their services.
