Gas Leaks
A gas leak is extremely dangerous and can result in an explosion. That’s why ASAP Plumbing is available to you 24/7 to come inspect if you think you have a gas leak.
If you believe you have a gas leak, there are a few things to do immediately. If you know where the shutoff is, go do that now, and open some windows. We are always on-call. We will have help on the way before you can open the rest of your windows. We can trace that gas smell and find the leaky culprit, and many would consider this as much or more of a safety issue than a flooded home or business.
Water Problems
Sometimes you have a plumbing issue that just can’t wait. Maybe water is leaking in your home or your pipes have burst. Whatever the case may be. ASAP Plumbing is standing by to help with your water emergency. Water damage can be costly and dangerous, so call us immediately if you have a water emergency.
If you have any idea where the water is coming from, see if there are immediate steps to be taken. Is the water in your home fresh water, or waste water? If it is fresh, shut off the water supply to your home. Wastewater is a little more difficult for you to take action on, but call us now!
Sewer Backups
A sewer backup is one of the worst calls we get, and one of the most common. Wastewater coming up through floor drains, bathtubs or low fixtures means a blockage somewhere in the line between your home and the city sewer or septic tank. The longer it sits, the more damage it does, and the cleanup involves more than mopping up.
If you spot a backup, stop using water in the home right away. Don’t run the dishwasher, washing machine or upstairs toilet, since adding more water makes the problem bigger. Call for help and stay clear of the affected area until a plumber can clear the line and confirm the system is safe to use again.
Burst Pipes and Major Leaks
A burst supply line can release dozens of gallons in just a few minutes. The first move is the main shutoff valve. Every homeowner should know where it is before something breaks. In most homes, it’s where the water line enters the house, often in a utility room, garage or under the front of the house. Newer homes sometimes have a separate shutoff at the meter outside.
Once the water is off, document what you see with photos for insurance, then move what you can off the floor. Boxes, electronics and anything paper-based take damage fast. While you’re working, the call to a 24-hour plumber should already be in. Cleanup goes much faster when the source is fixed first and the wet materials are removed before mold has a chance to set in.
Water Heater Failures
A water heater that ruptures becomes an emergency in a hurry. Tanks hold 40 to 80 gallons of water under pressure. When the tank fails, all of that ends up on the floor along with whatever sediment was sitting in the bottom. The damage is messy and the smell sticks around if it isn’t addressed quickly.
Other water heater issues that justify an emergency call include a strong gas smell near a gas unit, water visibly pooling around the base, and a pressure relief valve that won’t stop discharging. Any of those signal the unit needs to be shut down and looked at right away. Power off if it’s electric, gas off if it’s gas, and water off at the cold inlet.
Frozen Pipes During Cold Snaps
Winter on the Gulf Coast doesn’t last long, but the cold snaps it brings can catch homes by surprise. Pipes here aren’t always insulated the way they are in colder climates, and a hard freeze that lasts more than a day can leave you without water or, worse, with a burst pipe inside a wall.
If a faucet won’t run during a freeze, leave the cabinet doors open, set the faucet to a slow drip if water is still flowing somewhere in the house and call for help. Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe. The combination of heat and pressurized water is dangerous, and the thawing should be done in a controlled way by someone who can also fix the pipe if it has already cracked.
Steps to Take While You Wait for Help
The minutes between making the call and the plumber arriving are valuable. A quick checklist:
- Shut off the water at the closest fixture valve, or at the main if needed
- Shut off the gas if you smell gas or know the issue is gas-related
- Turn off the electricity to any room where water has reached outlets, light fixtures or appliances
- Move belongings up and out of the affected area
- Open windows to ventilate if there’s any chance of gas exposure
- Take photos before you start cleaning anything up
The goal is to stop the situation from getting worse and to give the plumber a clear field to work in when they arrive.
